Before the wedding, you must apply and be approved for a wedding.
If none of you have a Danish citizenship and do not live in Denmark, there are a few rules you will have to meet before we can marry you.
Here you will find a walkthrough of the procedure.
Civil wedding
You must apply through Roskilde Municipality if you and your partner:
- Are Danish citizens or are a citizen in a Nordic country (i.e. Finland, Sweden, Norway or Iceland)
- Have a permanent residence permit, issued in Denmark
- Have obtained a permanent residence right under the Directive 2004/38/EC implemented in Danish law as “EU-Opholdsbekendtgørelsen”
You can apply through Roskilde Municipality here
You must apply with the Agency of Family Law if neither of you:
- Are Danish citizens, nor citizens from a Nordic country (i.e. Finland, Sweden, Norway or Iceland)
- Have a permanent residence permit in Denmark
- Have obtained a permanent residence right under the Directive 2004/38/EC implemented in Danish law as "EU-Opholdsbekendtgørelsen.”
If you are to apply at Roskilde Municipality we need copies of both your passports and residence permits valid for Denmark. If you are an EU resident, we need a copy of your residence permit from the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI)
We also need certificates stating that you are not already married at the present moment. We must have such statements from every country that you have lived in. If you are divorced or widowed, we need to see the relevant court documents. Please remember to legalize your papers.
Scan your documents and attach them when you apply.
All documents must be legalized if they are from outside of EU. Documents must be legalized from the foreign ministry and the Danish embassy or consulate of the country in question.
The following countries do not need their papers to be legalized:
- EU countries
- USA
- Canada
- Australia
- New Zealand
- Turkey
When we receive your application and documents, we will check whether you meet the terms and conditions for a wedding in Denmark. If and when we have approved your application, we will contact you and find a wedding date. You will then get a formal confirmation sent to you.
If you have applied at Roskilde municipality, but should have applied with the Agency of Family Law, we will send your documents back to you and refer you to the Agency of Family Law.
